Explore the ForestMokelumne Wilderness
Whether you prefer the quiet solitude of a remote wilderness area or easy accessibility, the Mokelumne Wilderness is open to all. Located south of Hghway 88 and north of Highway 4 it is comprised of 105,165 acres along the upper Mokelumne River watershed. Much of the the area is rugged and remote with elevations ranging from 4000 feet near Salt Springs Reservoir to over 10,000 feet near the Sierra Crest at Carson Pass. Deep canyons, glacial valleys, and volcanic peaks create spectaular and diverse zones.
Numerous trails are found in the Wilderness. In addition to the PCT (Pacific Crest Trail) which passes from the southeastern to the northwestern corner of the wilderness, miles of other trails can take the hiker to overlook a river canyon, fish a quiet lake, or explore a historic mining area. The possibilities are endless.
Though most of the Mokelumne Wilderness is rugged and remote, the Carson Pass Management Area along Highway 88 is easily accessible and a great place for a wilderness experience. Known for the exceptional wildflower displays in the spring and spectacular views, it is a popular area for day hikes and short bakbacking trips.
Like in all wilderness areas, special regulations apply. Be sure to check online, at the Amador Ranger District in Pioneer or at the Carson Pass Information Station prior to your visit. Permits are required for overnight use.
